World Dance Alliance (WDA) announces a call for original scholarly articles and reviews for the upcoming volume of the Journal of Emerging Dance Scholarship (JEDS). JEDS is a peer-reviewed, annual journal with an international and interdisciplinary scope, and it facilitates an ethical and rigorous review process that supports new writers.
Manuscripts should contribute towards original and innovative scholarship on field of dance in contemporary or historical contexts, research methodologies, intellectual legacies, choreographic analyses, ethnography, pedagogy, practice, or other topics with insights into the field. Research should be supported by author’s institutional resources. Research engaging participants must show compliance with Institutional Human Participants Review procedures.
Theme: Complexities and Challenges in Dance/Dance Studies.
The call for papers invites contributions for JEDS 2024 that critically engage with the theme: Complexities and Challenges in Dance/Dance Studies. We seek submissions that address a wide array of topics, including but not limited to:
Representation and Identity: What are the reflections and negotiations with issues of identity, including gender, race, sexuality, caste, ethnicity? What are the challenges in representing diverse identities within practice and academic research? How do these identities impact performances, pedagogies, and/or aesthetics?
Aesthetics and Politics: What are some of the historic or evolving dimensions of aesthetics and politics in dance? How are they negotiated by power dynamics, sites, choreographic processes, contexts, or institutional structures? What are politics' implications on the production, dissemination, and reception of dance?
Dance Historical Scholarship: What do we understand by dance historiography and archiving? How are dance histories constructed, preserved, and contested? What are the challenges in documenting and archiving forms that are ephemeral? How does historical work and analyses influence, invite or even repurpose writings on dance?
Technology and Innovation: How is technology shaping creation, documentation, and dissemination of dance? What are the ethical considerations associated with integrating technology into dance? How do we place physicality of movements alongside motion-capture suits, interactive choreography, and immersive digital experiences?
Accessibility and Inclusivity: What are the barriers that exist in accessing dance education, training, and performance opportunities? How are practitioners and scholars unlocking inclusivity with insights from various models such as the social, cognitive, motoric, or from the disenfranchised groups? Does knowledge make practice more accessible?
Interdisciplinary Dialogues: What are the interdisciplinary approaches that enrich evolving perspectives of complex bodily realities? What could be the challenges and vantages of bridging dance studies with other disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, psychology, philosophy, and/or performance studies?
